Approximately 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Cars, walls and postal boxes were vandalized, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they stated in a release.
Law enforcement state they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a resident discovered that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish fluid.
The substance had been placed in the shape of a swastika, they stated.
Police then located multiple other vandalized automobiles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation outlawing the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.
Officials state preliminary tests indicate the liquid was most likely blood from a person.
"There is still no clue as to its origin; investigators are not yet aware of any harm in relation with the event," they stated.
Local authorities stated they were working "to solve the case" and have requested to the public for details.
A senior representative stated the incident rendered him speechless and needed to be addressed quickly.
"This act affects the core of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the far-right violent incident half a decade ago," he posted on social media, referring to the death of nine individuals by a shooter focusing on people of immigrant origin in five years prior.
