Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Displacement Confirmed

The island nation has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Authorities reported that the powerful weather system caused extensive flash flooding, storm surges, landslides, and fierce gale-force winds, prompting the relocation of 1.4 million residents across the country.

Extensive Damage and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams documented floodwaters climbing to rooftop levels and homes being swept away by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel rescued 14 individuals who were trapped on the roof surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. “A father frantically contacted us, saying his home’s roof was about to be ripped off by the wind. We rescued him and four relatives.”

By Monday, officials confirmed at least two deaths: one from drowning in Catanduanes and a second individual who died when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning as it crossed the main island, home to the national capital.

According to meteorological authorities, its maximum winds decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is expected to continue weakening while heading north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service indicated it was still working to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Roughly thousands of shelters were activated to accommodate 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck just days after another severe storm, which killed hundreds of lives with dozens unaccounted for before moving on toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for those still missing had to be suspended recently over risks for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is causing tropical storms stronger and frequent. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Scientists report that the frequency of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has increased by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

Global assessments suggest that severe weather events cause approximately US$3.5 million in damage to the country annually.

The Philippine president declared an emergency declaration on Thursday due to the extensive devastation from Kalmaegi and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
