Powerful Gales Cause Numerous Homes In the Dark in New Zealand

Storm damage in New Zealand
Locals encouraged to remain inside as powerful gusts lash the region.

Severe winds hitting velocities of as high as 155km/h (96mph) have caused around 90,000 properties lacking electricity and forced authorities to call off over 100 flights, as reported by domestic outlets.

The winds are affecting the whole southern region and lower areas of the North Island, as stated by the country's meteorological service.

Officials in New Zealand have issued uncommon severe gust advisories - the highest alert level - in core zones such as these major districts.

Residents have been urged to remain inside, refrain from journeys, and get ready for additional utility disruptions.

Widespread Damage and Emergency Response

The electricity loss is primarily influencing residences predominantly in the South Island, although agencies report that energy was being gradually reinstated.

Regional news have reported that in various locations structures have suffered roof damage, whereas trees and electricity poles have been toppled by the gusts.

In Wellington, a man was lost his life after being impacted by a tree branch at a well-known hiking path on Tuesday.

Also in the capital, a female was pushed toward oncoming traffic on a street by a powerful blast, in a moment that was filmed in a viral dashcam video.

Flights in and out of the city have been suspended because of the winds, and certain highways and community centers are not operating.

Meanwhile local leaders have announced a state of emergency, to support recovery activities.

Labor Protests During Extreme Weather

The wild winds on today occur while tens of thousands of educators, medical professionals and government employees are participating in what has been called a "significant labor action", demanding better pay and working conditions.

However the severe conditions has compelled them to change various scheduled activities, with various open-air gatherings moved indoors or cancelled.

Similar gusts are affecting the nearby nation, bringing a period of extreme heat to the remote areas.

Agencies have declared fire bans for concern about bushfires.
