Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing video review technology.

Video review technology will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the option to challenge particular decisions made by the official, mirroring the protocol currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development comes just a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been unsure if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
